Our Projects and Activities

CRG_project

The CRG is pleased to announce that its long awaited Training and Resource Centre was launched on 3 March 2010, another landmark date in our people’s fight for a better future. All the facilities available at the Centre are for the Chagossians, young and old. Visitors too are most welcome!

The many and varied activities organized by our members as part of CRG’s mission include the annual Chagos Cultural fair open to all: this fund-raising event is a showcase of the islands’ traditional food and drinks, such as the tasty seraz accompanied by the famous ‘Baka’ (fermented drink). Traditional music and songs of ‘les ziles la-haut’ (the outer islands, meaning the Chagos) create a nostalgic ambiance, while the younger ones would prefer dancing to an improvised discothèque.

As part of its community health and welfare activities, the CRG organizes medical caravans for general check-ups. These caravans take place in Baie-du-Tombeau (in the north of Mauritius) and Pointe-aux-Sables (near the capital) so as to reach a maximum of the Chagossians.

The CRG organizes regular residential camps for the elders at the Senior Citizen Centre of Pointe-aux-Sables, during which they share memories, anecdotes and stories of the Chagos. For the young, seminars and workshops are organized in collaboration with relevant NGOs to raise awareness and empower them against social evils.

Each year football tournaments are organized in collaboration with the British High Commissioner with teams (composed of Chagossian descendants) around the island.

The Training and Resource Centre plans to run many more cultural events, recreational activities and educational programmes for the well-being and development of our people.

Educational support

Convinced that education is the way out of poverty, the CRG has enlisted the support of 'Mo Pense Toi', an association of volunteers providing free tuition to secondary school students of Chagossian origin in a wide range of subjects and at different levels and grades.
A training course in oral English is also offered freely at the Resource Centre every Saturday for adults.

With the help of the British Council, the Centre will offer training programmes in computer literacy and other technical fields in a near future.

If you have any query, or you are willing to help the Centre, please contact us at:
